AI roleplay chat: scenes, characters and how to run a good story
Updated
AI roleplay chat is collaborative storytelling: you play yourself or a character, the AI plays hers, and the two of you write the scene one message at a time. On this site every character already has a job, a city, a history and a way of texting, so you start from a person instead of a blank prompt. This guide is about running the story well. It is for adults 18 and over.
How it differs from ordinary chat
In a normal AI girlfriend chat you are texting her as yourself, in the present. In roleplay you agree on a scene first: where you are, who you are to each other, what just happened. Actions go in asterisks or plain narration (*she slides the menu across the table*), dialogue in quotes. She keeps her personality but lives inside the scene you set.
Setting up a scene in one message
- Place and time: "Friday night, the rooftop bar after your shift."
- Who you are to her: strangers, coworkers, a long-term partner, rivals.
- A hook: something has just happened that she has to react to.
- Tone: slow-burn, funny, romantic or steamy. Say it plainly.
Example: "Let's roleplay. We're at your bakery after closing, I'm the supplier who keeps getting your order wrong, and the power just went out. Slow-burn, a bit teasing."
Scenario ideas by character type
- Fantasy heroines (anime characters): a knight-commander reporting to you after a patrol, a sky-pirate captain who just captured your ship, a mage who needs a volunteer for a spell.
- Career women (realistic characters): the attorney working late across the table from you, the ER doctor at the end of a double shift, the sommelier running a private tasting.
- Settled partner (AI wife characters): anniversary trip, moving into a new place, a lazy Sunday that goes somewhere.
- Confident, in charge (AI MILF characters): she runs the hotel you are staying in, or she's the boss who notices you stayed late.
Keeping a long story on track
- Give her something to react to in every message: an action, a line, a choice.
- If she forgets a detail, restate it in one line ("remember, we're still on the airship").
- Step out of the scene with brackets when you want to steer: (OOC: let's skip to the next morning).
- Short and specific beats long and vague. Three good sentences move a scene more than a paragraph.
Romantic and adult roleplay
Scenes can turn romantic or explicit when you take them there, between adults. The same hard limits as every chat apply: nothing involving minors or characters framed as young, no non-consent, incest, bestiality or real people. The full list is in the Acceptable Use Policy; for adult chat in general see our NSFW AI chat guide and AI sexting guide.
What you get here, and what you don't
20 free messages a day with any character, no account, no card. It is text roleplay only: no custom character builder, no image generation and no voice. If you want to design your own character from scratch, a character-builder site will suit you better; our comparison lists some. If you want a well-written character ready to play, pick someone and set the scene.
